Matsuoka Laboratory specializes in different fields of High-Performance Computing (HPC), such as Parallel and Distributed Computing.HPC is the technology that enables solving large-scale problems, such as different types of scientific simulations, faster and more efficiently. Nowadays, the role of HPC in accelerating computer simulations is clear, and research of advanced HPC technology in different application areas is the primary mission of Matsuoka Lab. We are collaborating with researchers in various areas to promote the use of HPC in different fields of science.
Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, including Deep Learning and various other Machine learning technologies is being rapidly applied to different aspects of science and even our society, raising a great demand for hardware and software tools to process a massive amount of data (so-called "Big Data") in a reasonable amount of time. Matsuka Lab adopts "the convergence of HPC and AI" as one of its main research themes, and conducts broad research activities in this field such as acceleration of large-scale AI applications using accelerators and supercomputers, and applying AI technology to real (HPC) applications.
The Global Scientific Information and Computing Center (GSIC) is currently operating TSUBAME 3.0, the #25 supercomputer in Japan (as of June 2019, with a peak theoretical performance of 12.1 PFlop/s), which was the result of a project led by Prof. Satoshi Matsuoka. Various scientific research projects were carried out on the previous TSUBAME series of supercomputers in Matsuoka Lab, which now continue on the current TSUBAME 3.0 platform. The accumulated knowledge was also used in developing AI Bridging Cloud Infrastructure (ABCI), the world #8 supercomputer (as of June 2019, with a peak theoretical performance of 32.6 PFlop/s), also led by Prof. Matsuoka.
As of August 2019, Prof. Matsuoka is the director of RIKEN Center for Computational Science, holding a leading role in the development of the Fugaku supercomputer and managing the High Performance Artificial Intelligence Systems Research Team.
